After elaborating on the pros and cons for a 4-2-3-1 formation for Manchester United with Ashley Young on the left hand side of their midfield three, it is time to take a look at other formations that Sir Alex Ferguson can try
with the focus on Young’s role for his new club side.
After their debacle against Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League final at Wembley, it is quite possible that Ferguson will star to play a 4-3-1-2 formation in order to get the best out of his new acquisition from Aston Villa.
Whilst this formation is not a particularly famous one in English football, Italian teams have used it in the 2010-2011 Serie A season.
Young can possibly line up as a central winger in this formation much like he did for Aston Villa when the Villains played Manchester United in February 2011 at Old Trafford. Young’s new position was given to him by http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Gerard-c14664 Houllier
who used his English winger in a much more central position. When Villa were without the possession of the ball, Young made it a point to close down Michael Carrick as he was Manchester United’s main defensive midfielder.
When the young Englishman was without the position of the ball, he used to drift towards his natural position towards the wings. In doing so, Young helped to create 2v1 situations in the wide areas to stretch the oppositions http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Defence-c38904.
This strategy can be effective at Manchester United where most of their build up play is focused on the wings. Ferguson has always used two wingers at Manchester United excluding his failed experiments with a 4-3-3 formation.
In a 4-3-1-2 formation, United can line up as;

Ashley Young
http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Wayne-Rooney-c36736 – Javier Hernandez
In such a formation Young can rest assured that he won’t have to curb his offensive instincts as there are three midfielder’s behind him to cater for a possible counter attack. The Englishman’s main duties will include drifting
out wide and linking up with Evra and Rafael on the wings when the full backs get forward at will to fill in the wide spaces. More importantly, he will have to establish a good understanding with Rooney and Hernandez as they will be critical to this formation
with their off the ball running. This formation can be easily converted into a 4-3-2-1 as well with Rooney drifting backwards and helping out Young in the midfield region leaving Hernandez up top to run in behind the opposition’s defence.
http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Phil-Jones-c29903 also gets to play an integral role in this setup as his role as United’s defensive midfielder will come in handy against teams such as Barcelona where Manchester United won’t be out numbered in central midfield due to
the presence of their three midfielders along with Young.  It remains to be seen where United will use Young but one thing is for certain that the former Aston Villa man will make a drastic impact on how United operate especially in Europe. Ferguson is determined
to overhaul http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Barcelona-c38604 and Young’s addition to an already blossoming squad is a step in the right direction.
