Ashley Young to sign new deal with Aston Villa
Aston Villa winger Ashley Young seems set to commit his future to the club. Young is expected to sign a new contract that will keep him at the club until 2014.
New Villa manager Gerrard Houllier has said that he expects the deal to be completed sooner rather than later.
Young’s commitment to the club is a massive boost to Houllier and will end much of the speculation that has surrounded the player.
Earlier in the season, Tottenham had declared their interest in Young and with Martin O’Neill leaving the club, there was a strong possibility that Young would request a transfer.
James Milner has already left the club and O’Neill resigned after the funds from the Milner deal were not made available to him from Aston Villa owner Randy Lerner.
Houllier only arrived at the club in the last month and keeping Young will be seen as a coup. The former Liverpool manager said, “Ashley, to me, has international qualities. He is clever, reads the game well, works hard, is quick, has got quick feet, can
score goals, make goals and takes part in movements to prepare goals."
Regarding Young’s international credentials, the new Aston Villa boss said, “Whether he can play for the national team is not down to me to say yes or no. All I know is that we want the player to step up another level because he is on the fringe of the international
team. I want him to be a regular player [for England]."
Young has scored three goals in seven appearances so far this season and the player will be rewarded with a new contract after impressing in the early stages of the season.
Houllier has also stated that he will try to convince Young’s fellow midfielder Nigel Reo-Coker to sign a new contract after he impressed in Villa’s last match.
