Ashun Wu keeps local’s hopes alive at the World Golf Championships – HSBC Champions
Ashun Wu of China brought cheers on the faces of the local fans, after he fired a four-under par 68 in the opening round of the World Golf Championships – HSBC Champions, on Thursday, November 1, 2012.
Entering the second round of the last of the four WGCs of the season, he is sharing the ninth position on the leaderboard.
The tournament is co-sanctioned by the PGA Tour, European Tour and the Asian Tour, and is being played at the prestigious Mission Hills Golf Club. HSBC Champions is the only WGC that is held outside the United States.
Wu got off to a poor start by conceding a bogey on the first hole. He then made a strong comeback by recording four birdies on the front nine for a three-under par score before the turn.
The back nine of the course witnessed him add another two shots to his scorecard, while conceding a single bogey to finish the round just three strokes behind the co-leaders, Louis Oosthuizen and Adam Scott.
Talking to the reporters after finishing his round, he expressed his pleasure in posting a good score on the leaderboard.
According to him, his superb putting technique helped him enter into contention for a strong position in the tournament.
He now plans to remain consistent in the remaining three rounds to record a good finish in the richest golf tournament on the Asian soil.
“I putted well today and caught a few birdies. Those bogeys were the outcome of my bad second shoots,” said Wu, who cut his professional teeth on the Asian Tour in 2008-2009 seasons.
He added, “The greens are very nice, there are some hidden grains but I made some good judgments on some tough reads and made a few birdies and ended up a pretty good score card”.
He also stated that his experience on the Asian Tour also helped him play well on the difficult Mission Hills Golf Club’s Olazabal Course.
“I have got used to these type of grass and also my career started with the Asian Tour, I might have better experience on reading such greens,” he said.
