Asia Cup 2012: Mahela Jayawardene takes the blame for defeat against India – Cricket News Update
Sri Lankan skipper, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750 in the second match of Asia Cup 2012, played at Shere Bangla National Stadium, Mirpur.
Jayawardene won the toss and invited India to bat first. The Men in Blue made the most of the batsman friendly pitch and piled a gigantic total of 304 runs. However, disappointingly, the Lankans could only manage 254 in reply.
The skipper played a fighting knock of 78 runs but despite his best efforts he was furious for throwing his wicket away. Admitting that he played a rash shot and should have stayed till the end.
Jayawardene said, “I think I played a bad shot to get out. I think when you are chasing something like that, the guys who make starts have to carry on. We needed to keep our heads together and chase the score down but we couldn't really do that.”
Jayawardene, who batted in the middle-order previously, promoted himself to the opener slot during the CB series, and the Lankans are sticking with the same policy for the Asia Cup. The ploy seemed to work for the Lankan skipper, as he has been scoring loads
of runs. The skipper is enjoying his stint at the top and finds it relatively easy to bat along side http://www.senore.com/Cricket/KC-Sangakkara-c1779.
The Lankans' bowling attack was taken to pieces by the Indian batters, especially http://www.senore.com/Cricket/SK-Raina-c2539 to make
the most of the death overs. Dhoni and Raina put on 78 runs from just 7.1 overs at 10.88 rpo in the last overs.
Acknowledging the way the Indians took the game away, Jayawardene said, “I think India set up their innings nicely with Virat and Gambhir at the top. It is tough to bowl to people like Dhoni and Suresh since they are big hitters. We made a lot of mistakes
today, with the bat, in the field and with the ball. We can't keep making mistakes like this because we might go out of the tournament then.”
