After delivering a marvellous performance and clinching the maiden title in the Asian Champions Trophy (ACT), Indian hockey finally received a positive response from the corporate sector, as the head of sponsorships will help out the sport to further promote
and train the players at the grass roots level.
Desh Deepak Verma, the Director General of the Sports Authority of India (SAI) informed the media about the rising interests of corporate promotion of national sport. He stated that hockey will be a key recipient of corporate generosity more than any other
sport if they continue their winning streak. However, he did not speak about any time frame in this regard and also stated that Tennis and Basketball will be the other beneficiary sports of the giant corporations.
He further informed that some corporate leaders have showed their consent to second the national game. Verma urged the corporate houses to pick up the weak sports and earn a good name for the country. He said, “A few corporate houses have expressed their
willingness to adopt hockey, basketball and tennis. There are others who want to help but do not know where to go. We will urge the corporate houses to take up games which have the potential. Archery is a good example where these firms can make a difference.”
The Director General of SAI handed over the cash rewards worth 150,000-rupees to each and every member of the squad that won the match for India. The SAI Director was of the opinion that they would engage colossal organisations for sponsorships. Though the
national sport does have a few sponsors, but it will be more beneficial when corporate houses join hands to promote hockey.
He expressed the view that the foreign coaches who are only responsible with the national side will be directed to train other age groups and Women squads. In his opinion, these decisions will help out the sport to reach international standards. The addition
of corporate sponsorships will add a tremendous advantage to Indian hockey and help promote the sport at all levels.
