Asian Games: Somdev Devvarman powers his way into semis

The 25-year-old Somdev Devvarman of India made his way into the semi-final round of the Asian Games men’s singles event after getting the better of his sixth seed foe, Zhang Ze from China in the quarter-final round on Sunday.
Somdev, who is seeded number two to win the title in China got past his opponent in two sets to seal win in the end. The final score line was 6-4, 6-4. The battle was stretched to a time period of two hours at the Aoti Tennis Center.

The Assam born who made his debut on the ATP World Tour back in 2008 is currently ranked number 106 in the world. The right-hander posted his best result of the season by advancing into the ATP Tour quarterfinal of the SA Open men’s singles competition in Johannesburg.
He also stormed into the second round of the ATP World Tour 500 series Dubai Tennis Tournament where he was toppled by Marcos Baghdatis in straight sets.
The professional tennis ace from India also helped his country in the Davis Cup match versus Russia.
Somdev did well to qualify for the 2010 French Open Men’s singles tournament but lost at the hands of Marco Chiudinelli in a five setter epic in the opening round. Chiudinelli won 6–3, 3–6, 6–3, 3–6, 6–3.
The 1.80-metre tall also achieved direct entry to the US Open where he was toppled by Kevin Anderson of South Africa in the first round in three sets. He lost 3-6, 4-6 and 3-6.
At the grass court Grand Slam tournament in London, Somdev contested in the doubles draw along with his partner Treat Huey, where they lost to Pak-India duo of Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi and Rohan Bopanna in four sets. The final match score was 3-6, 7-5, 6-3,
7-6.
Somdev achieved his career high ranking of world number ninty six back in August.
The Indian, as a result of this victory will next take on the winner of the second quarter-final clash between Danai Udomchoke of Thailand and Japan's Tatsuma Ito.
His countrymen Karan Rastogi, who was seeded number seven in China, was thrashed out in three sets by Dennis Istomin from Uzbekistan earlier in the day. The final match score was 2-6, 6-4, 5-7.
