Asian Games Women’s Tennis latest: Chuang Chia-jung and Chan Yung-jan capture Gold in Doubles event
The Taiwanese pair of Chuang Chia-jung and Chan Yung-jan got the better of their compatriot duo of Hsieh Su- Wei and Chang Kai-chen in the Final of the Women’s Tennis Doubles event at the Asian Games on Monday, brining their country’s gold medal count to
a total of seven.
The number one seeded pair Chuang and Chan cruised past their third seed opponents in two sets with a score of 7-5, 6-3. Wei and Chen, after losing won a silver medal as runners-up of the event.
Chuang and Yung did battle hard in the opening set to take a lead of 7-5. In the following set, the third seed pair of Chen and Wei couldn’t match the improved level of game of their rivals who took charge right from the first game and sealed their victory
in the end.
Overall, the Taiwanese tennis contenders have been performing well at the Asian Games, winning two gold, two silvers and a single bronze so far in the sixteenth edition of the games in China.
In the singles action, Indian hopes of a gold medal at the Asian Games from the women’s side were dashed when the 24-year-old Sania Mirza settled for a bronze after falling at the hands of her third seed foe Akgul Amanmuradova earlier in the semi-final round
in Guangzhou.
Mirza lost the long drawn out clash against her heavy hitting Uzbek opponent. The final match score was 7-6 (7), 3-6 and 4-6. The professional tennis ace from India committed a couple of forehand errors to exit from the event.
The right hander who is currently ranked number 166 in the world after her loss while commenting on her opponent’s game reflected, "We played for an hour and forty five minutes and it could have gone either way. She was the better player on the day. Her
main strength is her serves which she mixes up well.”
Meanwhile, Chan Yung-jan and Yang Tsung-hua are also poised to capture gold or silver in the mixed doubles event later in the day versus an Indian pair.
