Asian Games athletics events conclude
The 2010 Asian Games track and field competition came to a close on Friday 26 November. Host China, Saudi Arabia and Bahrain won two gold medals each on the last day of competition at the Aoti Main Stadium.
Li Yanxi won the men's triple jump with a season best 16.94m. Yevgeniy Ektov of Kazakhstan settled for the silver in 16.86m while another Chinese Cao Shuo claimed the bronze in 16.84m.
China won another gold when the quartet of Lu Bin, Liang Jiahong, Su Bintian and Lao Yi ruled the men's 4x100m relay. They clocked a personal best 38.78 seconds, finishing ahead of Chinese Taipei's Wang
Wen-Tang, Liu Yuan-Kai, Tsai Meng-Lin and Yi Wei-Chen (39.05).
Thailand's Poommanus Jankem, Wachara Sondee, Jirapong Meenapra and Sittichai Suwonprateep bagged the bronze in 39.09.
Saudi Arabia also had a successful outing. Sultan Aboulmajeed E Alhabashi won the men's shot put with a best throw of 20.57m. Zhang Jun of China placed second in 19.59m while Chinese Taipei's Chang Ming-Huang
pocketed the bronze in 19.48m.
The Middle East giants topped the men's 4x400m relay in the day's final event. Ismail Mohammed H Alsibyani, Mohammed Obaid A Alsalhi, Hamed Hamdan A Albishi and Yousef Ahmad M Masrahi posted a winning
time of 3:02.30, which is a best for the foursome.
They crossed the finish line ahead of Japan’s Yusuke Ishitsuka, Kenji Fujimitsu, Hirose Hideyuki and Yuzo Kanemaru, who was just .13 behind Masrahi. China, represented by Lin Yang, Deng Shijie, Chang Pengben
and Liu Xiaosheng, claimed the bronze in 3:03.66.
Bahrain once again showcased their dominance in the middle-distance events, thanks to their foreign-born athletes.
Ethiopia-born Mimi Belete Gebregeiorges won the women's 5,000m. She posted a personal best time of 15:15.59 as she survived a late surge from Indian runner Preeja Sreedharan, who was just 0.40 behind.
Another Indian Kavita Raut took the bronze in 15:16.54. 
Bilisuma Shugi Gelassa likewise set a personal best in winning the men's 10,000m. The former Ethiopian national clocked 27:32.72 to beat Kenya-born Essa Ismail Rashed of Qatar (27:33.09). Another Bahraini
import, Kenya-born Mahboob Ali Hasan Mahboob, took the bronze in 27:40.07. 
Svetlana Radzivil of Uzbekistan won the women's high jump with a personal best 1.95m.
Another Uzbek Nadiya Dusanova (1.93m) settled for the silver while Kazakhstan's Anna Ustinova and China's Zheng Xingjuan shared the bronze after both clearing 1.90m.
Yukifumi Murakami of Japan won the men's javelin in 85.15m. Park Jae-myoung of South Korea pocketed the silver in 79.92m while Rinat Tarzumanov of Kazakhstan snared the bronze in 79.65m.
Thailand emerged victorious in the 4x100m relay. Phatsorn Jaksuninkorn, Neeranuch Klomdee, Laphassaporn Tawoncharoen and Nongnuch Sanrat posted a winning time of 44.09.
China's Tao Yujia, Liang Qiuping, Jiang Lan and Ye Jiabei finished second in 44.22 while Japan's Mayumi Watanabe, Momoko Takahashi, Yumeka Sano and double sprint champion Chisato Fukushima finished third
in 44.41.
The Indian quartet of Manjeet Kaur, Sini Jose, Ashwini Chidananda Akkunji and Mandeep Kaur won the women's 4x400m in 3:29.02.
Kazakhstan's Marina Maslyonko, Viktoriya Yalovtseva, Margarita Matsko and Olga Tereshkova finished second in 3:30.03 while China's Zheng Zhihui, Tang Xiaoyin, Chen Lin and Chen Jingwen came in third in
3:30.89.
Only the men's and women's marathon events are left to be contested in the athletics programme. Both races will be held tomorrow, just hours before the closing ceremonies.
