Asian Games tennis, Peng Shuai storms into semifinal
The professional tennis player from China, Peng Shuai, made her way into the semi final round of the Asian Games women’s singles competition after getting the better of Chang Kai Chen of Taiwan in two sets on Saturday. The final match score was 6-2, 7-6
(7/1).
Peng, as a result of this victory will meet Kimiko Date Krumm, a top seed player in the final four battle in China. The 24 year old Peng, who made her debut on the WTA tour back in 2001, did well to get past her opponent despite her right wrist injury.
Currently ranked number 72 in the South African Airways WTA list, Peng played her last championship of the season at the the $100,000 ITF event in Taipei which was contested on carpet. She toppled Jovanovski in the quarters, Tamarine Tanasugarn in the semi-finals
and in the title battle to finish as champion.
Prior to her ITF event, the Hunan born competed at the 2010 BGL Luxembourg Open as an unseeded player where she bundled out the top seed and the then world number nine Elena Dementieva in the opening round.
The right hander played a superb match and led 5–1 in the second set. However, Elena launched a comeback and clinched a two setter victory in the end. The final match score was 7–5, 7–6(3). This was Peng's last WTA tour clash of the year.
The forty year old Kimiko, who was the Asian Games winner at Hiroshma back in 1994, dispatched off Lee Jin in two sets earlier in the day. The final match score was 7-6 (7/2), 7-5.
Strong hitting Akgul Amanmuradova of Uzbekistan required three sets to topple Ayumi Morita of Japan. The final score line was 6-2, 2-6, 6-2. She will next play Sania Mirza of India, who reached the final four round, in China after dismissing her Thai opponent
Tamarine Tanasugarn.
In the men's side, Denis Istomin eased past Jeong Suk-Young from South Korea in two sets. The final match score was 6-3, 6-4.
Meanwhile, Danai Udomchoke of Thailand knocked down Taiwan's Yang Tsung-hua in straight sets with a final score line of 7-5, 7-5.
