Asian Games volleyball recap: South Korea stays perfect, Indonesia and Saudi Arabia earn wins
The men’s volleyball preliminary round at the 2010 Asian Games ended on Wednesday 17 November with six matches. The women’s preliminary round begins Thursday.
Mongolia vs Indonesia Group C
Indonesia improved to 2-2 in Group C with a 3-0 (25-22 25-17 25-16) victory over Mongolia. They finished in third place in the Group and will play Taiwan on Friday and Pakistan on Saturday in the 9-16
position placement round. Mongolia dropped to 0-4 with the loss, and did not qualify for the placement round.
Adam led Indonesia with 18 points, and Sakhanbaatar Erdenebat led Mongolia with 15.
Mongolia stayed close to Indonesia in the first set, losing by a mere three points, but they couldn’t keep it up in the second and third sets as Indonesia won both by margins of eight and nine points respectively.
Kazakhstan vs South Korea Group B
South Korea beat Kazakhstan in straight sets (25-16 25-14 25-22). The win gave South Korea a 3-0 record and first place in Group B. They have yet to lose a set at the Asian Games. They’ll play Qatar on
Friday and Japan on Saturday in the 1-8 placement round.
Kazakhstan finished third in Group B with a 1-2 record, and will play Myanmar on Friday and the Athletes from Kuwait on Saturday in the 9-16 placement round.
Chul Woo Park led all South Korean scorers with 20 points while Marat Imangaliyev led Kazakhstan with 13 points.
South Korea dominated Kazakhstan in the first two sets, winning handily by nine and 11 points respectively. Kazakhstan looked to attempt a comeback in the third set, but only managed to stay close, losing
25-22. South Korea dominated the match in kill blocks 10-3, and Kazakhstan struggled in their spiking with 20 faults and an efficiency percentage of 12.
Turkmenistan vs Saudi Arabia Group C
Saudi Arabia earned a 3-0 (25-18 25-23 25-22) victory over Turkmenistan in the final Group C match. The Saudis finished with a 3-1 record, good enough for second place, and they’ll play China on Friday
and Thailand on Saturday in the 1-8 placement round.
Turkmenistan finished with a 1-3 record and in fourth place in the Group C. They’ll play Pakistan on Friday and Taiwan on Saturday in the 9-16 placement round.
Ahmed A. Albakhet was the top player for Saudi Arabia with 17 points, and Gurban Yazguliyev led Turkmenistan with 12 points.
Other than a 25-18 win for Saudi Arabia in the first set, this match was close with Turkmenistan losing narrowly in the second and third sets.
