Asian Games women’s volleyball preliminary round recap
The women’s volleyball preliminary round came to an end on Monday. The quarter-finals and the 9-11 placement matches will begin on Wednesday.
South Korea vs Mongolia Pool A
South Korea beat Mongolia in straight sets (25-7 25-12 25-14) to improve to 3-1 and take second in Pool A. Mongolia fell to 1-3 and finished fourth in the Pool.
South Korea will take on Japan in their quarter-final while Mongolia will play Kazakhstan.
Yeon Koung Kim led South Korea with 22 points. Tsetsegjargal Ganbold and Buyanjargal Purevjav led Mongolia with six points each.
Taiwan vs India Pool B
Taiwan beat India 3-0 (25-12 25-12 25-12) to earn fourth place in Pool B with a 2-3 record. India had to settle for fifth place with a 1-4 record.
Taiwan earned a place in the quarter-finals with the win. They’ll take on China while India will play the winner of the Tajikistan and Maldives match for ninth place in the tournament.
Four players had six points to led India while Wan-Ting Chen led Taiwan with 15 points. Taiwan had an incredible 15 aces against India, who had four in response.
Kazakhstan vs Japan Pool B
Kazakhstan remained undefeated at 5-0 with a 3-1 (25-15 22-25 25-23 25-21) victory over Japan. They took first place in Pool B while Japan fell to third place with a 3-2 record.
Rika Nomoto had 20 points for Japan to lead all scorers in the match. Inna Matveyeva and Olga Dobryshevskaya led Kazakhstan with 15 points apiece.
Kazakhstan relied on superior blocking to win this match. They had 14 kill blocks to Japan’s six, and held Japan to a 16.76 spiking efficiency.
North Korea vs Maldives Pool B
North Korea beat Maldives 3-0 (25-4 25-1 25-3) in the most lopsided match of the tournament so far. They improved to 4-1, good enough for second place in Pool B, while Maldives finished 0-5 without winning a set.
North Korea will play Thailand in the quarterfinals, and Maldives will take on Tajikistan in the 9-11 placement match.
Sun Jong Ri led Korea in scoring with 12 points. Only two players managed to score points for Maldives. Muna Muneer and Haleemath Sama each had two points. North Korea beat Maldives in blocks 18-1 and had 44 running sets to Maldives’ one.
China vs Thailand Pool A
The final match of the day was between China and Thailand with China earning a 3-1 (25-23 25-21 26-24 25-19) victory.
China’s scoring was led by Yimei Wang, who had 20 points and Yunwen Ma, who had 15. Malika Kanthong and Amporn Hyapha led Thailand with 214 points.
China had a better spiking efficiency at 30.37 to Thailand’s 18.44, and they out-blocked them 11-4, but Thailand was able to win the aces battle 6-4.
