Asian Games women's volleyball quarter-finals recap
The women’s volleyball quarter-finals were played on Wednesday 24 November at the Asian Games in China. The semi-finals will be played on Thursday 25 November.
North Korea vs Thailand Quarter-final 1
North Korea advanced to the semi-finals with a 3-2 (25-23 17-15 27-25 7-25 15-12) victory over Thailand. Each of the first three sets was close before Thailand crushed North Korea in the fourth set 25-7. But the Koreans didn’t allow the huge margin of victory
to deter them as they able to battle back, taking the fifth set 15-12.
Jin Sim Jong led North Korea with 26 points while Onuma Sittirak led Thailand with 26.
North Korea’s spiking efficiency was a mere 19.62 per cent compared to Thailand’s percentage of 33.13. Thailand led in most statistical categories, but it was their errors that saw them lose this match. They had 15 serving faults and 23 blocking faults.
That was enough to see North Korea through to the semi-finals.
South Korea vs Japan Quarter-final 2
South Korea beat Japan in straight sets (25-16 25-22 25-15) in a match that Japan was never really in. The Koreans had a spiking efficiency percentage of 35.23 to Japan’s 13.68. South Korea also beat Japan in kill blocks (10-2), aces (4-1) and digs (22-12).
Yeon Koung Kim led South Korea in points with 22, and Miku Izuoka led Japan with 10.
Kazakhstan vs Mongolia Quarter-final 3
Kazakhstan demolished Mongolia in their quarter-final 3-0 (25-18 25-8 25-12). Mongolia had a miserable spiking efficiency of 1.11 per cent which was the primary cause of their huge loss.
The brightest part for Mongolia was 10 points from Enkhsaikhan Gantsetseg. Kazakhstan’s top scorers were Olga Dobryshevkaya and Lyudmila Anarbayeva who had 13 and 12 points respectively.
Kazakhstan had 13 aces to Mongolia’s three, and they beat them in kill blocks 12-2.
China vs Taiwan Quarter-final 4
China won the last quarter-final match of the day 3-0 (25-16 25-21 25-16) over Taiwan. It was another mismatch that saw China win with a spiking efficiency percentage of 27.27.
Leading China in scoring was Juan Li with 15 points, and Yen Min Teng led Taiwan with 12.
China out-blocked Taiwan in kill blocks 13-3, and they beat them in aces 5-3, but it was 20 spiking faults by Taiwan that really took them out of the match.
Semi-finals
Kazakhstan will play South Korea in one semi-final, and China will play North Korea in the other.
