Asian Men’s Volleyball Championship coming to Dubai in 2013
The Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) has recently confirmed a deal with UAE Volleyball (UAEVA) that the next edition of AVC Men’s Volleyball Championship will be held in Dubai.
The beautiful city of United Arab Emirates, Dubai, has had the privilege of hosting many international events of different nature and has the capacity to facilitate volleyball athletes. The 17th AVC Men’s Volleyball Championship will take place in Dubai,
U.A.E. in September 2013.
The FIVB Club World Championships in Doha, Qatar served as the main inspiration for UAE to seal the deal with Asian Volleyball Federation. City of Doha has successfully hosted the Club World Championships in the last two years. Dubai will also set the tradition
of hosting volleyball events with the advent of AVC Championship.
In past, different Asian countries including Qatar and Kuwait have hosted the biennial event of AVC Men’s Championship. Most recently, 2011 edition of the tournament was held in Tehran, Iran. The hosts took full advantage of the opportunity and secured title
trophy in their homeland. This year, 16 Asian teams came into stride and fought for the volleyball supremacy. However, the U.A.E. Organizers of 2013 AVC Volleyball Championship have plans to make it a bigger event and invite 22 countries to join the biggest
continental tournament in Asia.
The President of UAE Volleyball Association (UAEVA), Amer Ali, said, “Our target is to ensure we have the highest number of 22 participating teams in this important competition.” Of course, as hosts we will have our challenge of doing well. However, I cannot
say that we will have a team that is capable of winning the title in two years, but at least we will have a much stronger team that is capable of competing against the best in Asia.”
Nevertheless, he expressed more concern in making it the successful event in all respects. Ali seemed quite confident to set up the best field of play for the participants of campaign.
The Hamdan Bin Mohammed Sports Complex in Dubai is set to serve as the host this volleyball championship. Previously, the same venue has been used to host two major FINA swimming events in 2010.
Since the inception of the Asian Volleyball Championships in 1975, Japan has been the most successful team by winning the title a record seven times. South Korea is No. 1 with four titles, while China has won three championships. Australia, Iran and Kazakhstan
have secured one gold medal apiece.
