Asian Tour: Lee Westwood to play Indonesian Masters
Lee Westwood has confirmed his participation in the Indonesian Masters set to take place at Royale Jakarta Golf Club in East Jakarta.
The officials of Asian Tour broke the news in a press conference held on Thursday. Asian Tour chief executive Kyi Hla Han told the press, “With Westwood’s confirmation that he will compete in the inaugural event, he has rubberstamped the Indonesian Masters
as a premier event on the Asian Tour, reflecting the importance of the game for the nation. The event will put Indonesian golf on the world map, as the four-day tournament would be broadcast worldwide.”
The Asian Tour has been working hard to promote golf in the region and after a long time, their efforts seem to pay off. According to the official website of Asian Tour, 156 golfers from 25 countries will compete for a purse of US$750,000. Moreover, twenty
professional local seeds from the Indonesian Professional Golfers Association will participate in the tournament. The international field will give the local talent a chance to learn from the top guns.
With Westwood’s confirmation, the next step of the Asian Tour is quite visible. The world number one will attract other big boys apart from the media attention.
Commenting on his contention, Westwood said, “Asia has always been good to me over the years as I have won several titles across the region and I hope to challenge for my first win in Indonesia. However, I know it will not be easy as the level of competition
on the Asian Tour is really strong. Indonesia is a wonderful country to visit and I can’t wait to return.”
This will not be Westwood’s first attempt at the Asian Tour. He visited Indonesia for the 2007 Pertamina Indonesia President Invitational where he finished third.
In a recent statement, the world number one said he was looking forward to playing the tournament as he knew the amount of competition he was going to face.
The tournament will kick off on 21 April, 2011, three weeks after the US Masters.
