Asian Women’s Club Volleyball Championship kicks off in Thailand – Volleyball news
The thrilling action of women’s volleyball kicked off at the 2012 Asian Women's Club Volleyball Championship on Saturday, April 21.
A total of nine teams from Asia installed their bases in Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand. The famous MCC Hall set up the field of play for day-1 matches.
The 13th edition of the AVC Club Volleyball Championship is scheduled to cover its length in nine days (April 21-29). The Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) is the organising authority of the tournament.
The grid of nine teams has been split into two pools. Pool A is composed of teams from Vietnam (VTV Binh Dien Long An), Iran (Gitipasand), Japan (Toray Arrows), Myanmar (Asia World VC) and hosts Thailand (Chang) whereas teams from Malaysia (Santa Barbara
Polo & Racquet), China (Tianjin Bridgestone), Kazakhstan (Zhetyssu), and Sri Lanka (S.L.B.F.E) are placed in Pool B.
The tournament started off with the pool round-robin preliminaries on Saturday and four matches were played.
Pool B teams Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet) of Malaysia and Sri Lanka's S.L.B.F.E crossed their ways in the first fixture of the day. The Malaysian ladies proved to be better and posted 3-1 (20-25, 25-17, 25-18, 25-19) victory over Sri Lankan rivals. The
Malaysian team did not a have a good start in the match and dropped opening stanza. However, they made a great comeback and pulled off success by capturing the next three sets.
The second match of the day was played between ‘Pool A’ teams. Vietnam’s VTV Binh Dien came into contest with Asia World VC of Myanmar. The women from Vietnam launched full authority on the opposite side and finished the match in straight sets. Team Myanmar
x received 0-3 (14-25, 13-25, 21-25) defeat and suffered the early damage.
In the next match, Chinese Tianjin Bridgestone staged a head-to-head battle with Zhetysu of Kazakhstan. It was a tiring long match, which spanned over five sets. Both teams fought bravely and showcased their game skills in front of the audience. In the end,
Tianjin Bridgestone managed to clinch success by throwing 3-2 (25-20, 25-18, 22-25, 20-25, 15-11) on board.
The last match of day-1 brought the hosts from Thailand in the court. Local team Chang met Japanese Toray Arrows. Despite having the advantage of familiar conditions, the hosts dropped the decision in five-set match. Japan bagged the opening day victory,
while the scores were: 27-25, 25-21, 14-25, 21-25, and 15-11.
The Asian Women’s Club Volleyball Championship will serve as the qualification tournament for the FIVB World Women's Club Championship. The Qatari City Doha will serve as host to the FIVB World Women's Club Championship, which will take place from October
13 to 19. The women’s of the on-going Asian Club Championship will earn the right to represent Asia at the World Championship.
