The Asian Women’s Volleyball Championship 2010 is in full swing this week. It started on Sunday and during the first leg of preliminary round, seven matches were played at Phan Dinh Phung and Tan Binh Gymnasiums in Vietnam.
The teams from Pool C and Pool D graced the podium on Monday afternoon. In Pool C, Thailand and India ousted teams from Chinese Taipei and Fiji respectively. Likewise China and Korea over-powered Australia and Iran in Pool D matches.
Thailand vs. Chinese Taipei
Thailand and Chinese Taipei (CT) played the first match of second day at Tan Binh gymnasium. The game was full of suspense and uncertainty up until the last minute. The score shifted with a narrow difference of points while the teams demonstrated great effort
and kept the audience firm in their seats.
First set
The battle started when Thailand took an early lead while Chinese Taipei tried every possibility to restrain Thailand from scoring points. Exchange of fast spikes and tricky passes was common during the first set. Somehow, Thailand managed to steal points
and claim win after posting 25-15.
Second Set
Second set proved to be a real challenge for the Chinese Taipei but they produced powerful serves which perfectly landed in Thailand’s court. Thailand were also ready to defend and maintain their lead as Thai players blocked the spikes and returned the shots.
They saved points and also kept an upper-hand on the struggling young team from Chinese Taipei. Despite their efforts, CT failed to break Thailand’s lead and lost the second set. The grueling battle ended at 30-28.
Third Set
The two sets’ defeat didn’t let the Taipei players down and they fought back to settle the tussle. They had already suffered enough damage in the first two sets so they resolved to improve their game. In the meantime, Thailand missed a few shots and C.T.
took full advantage of the situation. They were able to pick up a lead in the third set, finally capturing victory by 25-13.
Fourth Set
The fourth set turned out to be the decisive one. Thailand covered every nook and cranny of the court and played very sensibly. There was no room for any mistakes and both teams were under huge pressure. Chinese Taipei were actively scoring points while
Thailand also continued with their strong attack.
The game entered the most crucial phase after the second technical timeout. But the tiring battle came close to the end when Thailand achieved set point. They finished the set by getting a kill in the last moments at 25-23.
