Asian champions defeat Korea 3-0 on opening day of FIVB Men’s World Olympic Qualifying Tournament
The FIVB Men’s World Olympic Qualifying Tournament started on June 1, Friday in Tokyo.
The venue of the matches was the Tokyo Metropolitan Gym. One of the competitions saw the Koreans compete with the champions from Asia. The result of the match was a win for Iran earned after bagging three back-to-back sets.
Not only were the Iranians successful in grabbing a win, they defeated the Koreans in each set by a comfortable margin. The scoreboard showed the following set scores after the match had ended, 25-17, 25-18 and 25-16.
The Iranian coach, Julio Velasco, expressed his satisfaction over the win by making the following comments at the press conference conducted after the match, “I'm very happy for the 3-0 win because we get three points, which is important in this tournament.
I was worried because we did not play last month due to visa problem with the Czech Republic and Poland. Everything was good - better than I thought. Our serve was strong. We studied them.”
Park Ki-Won, the Korean coach, shared his views in the following manner, “One reason for the loss was we could not shift our defense well. Our serve and reception were not good and not stable.”
The player with the highest number of points in the match was the Iranian Mohammad Mousavi as he kept the score board ticking by tallying 17 points. Mousavi was helped by his team member Farhad Ghaemi, who was able to put up 15 points in all.
On the other hand, the highest tally from the Korean side seven, as Park Chul-Woo struggled to keep the momentum of his team going.
The first set saw the Iranians move to 5-2 and still kept the lead at the first technical time out at 8-5. After that point, the Iranians kept on speeding ahead and managed a win at 25-17. The second and the third sets of the game followed the same pattern
as the first one with Korea putting in a half hearted effort and the Iranian squad bagging the frames at 25-18 and 25-16 respectively.
