Aside from the engine, is there anything else that helps a cruise ship move?

I need to compare a cell to a cruise ship for school...the mitochondria (or powerhouse of the cell) is the engine...the flagella of a cell is also used for movement, but I don't know what to compare it to! Is there any secondary source of energy or movement in a cruise ship??

  1. I will tell you what I know and you can decide if you can use it.  I saw this just a couple days on the travel channel when they showed how things work on cruise ships.

The modern cruise ships now being used have a massive diesel engine, generally 3 or 4 of them, that generate electric power.  The ships are actually propelled by pods that look similar to jet plane engines and are about that size.  The pods are powered by electric motors which are supplied by the diesel engines.  Large ships like the Freedom of the Seas and the Queen Mary have 4 pods hanging down under the ship.  Two are used strictly for forward propulsion and the other two are directional, meaning that they can be swiveled to steer the ship right, left or in reverse.  Ships also have thrusters on the sides that are used for parking and moving away from the pier.  Thus most ships these days do not need tug boats to dock or to get back out.

  2. OCEAN CURRENTS....YOU MIGHT SAY FLUIDS SURROUNDING THE CELL...THE FLAGELLA IS A LOT LIKE A SHIPS PROPELLER AND RUDDER

  3. Yes when they come to some ports they have to use tugs. other than that it is just the tide and the current. which the propulsion has to fight or go with. then of course you have the wind, the same is there, normally only in high winds it would have to face the wind, in normal winds it can run with them, and reduce engine power

  4. The thrusters (? spelling) create movement.  They are used when docking.

  5. Nope, sorry.  Cruise ships have only one power.  There are some that have sails, however... check out windjammer cruises... maybe you can make a good case from their ships.
