Asim Kamal backs the new domestic cricket format in Pakistan – Cricket News Update
The out of favour Pakistan middle-order batsman, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mohammad-Asim-Kamal-c76771, is extremely impressed by the Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB’s) move to separate regional and departmental cricket and thinks that the step is going to enhance the level of competition at the grass-root
level.
Domestic cricket in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Pakistan-c755 is confused between regional and departmental teams since the last four decades, with the experts and the former players holding different opinions.
Over the last 10 years, the PCB has continuously tinkered with the sport at the national level. In the recent years, local teams as well as the franchises played together in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy, which resulted in a number of one-sided affairs, with the
departments having the services of high quality cricketers.
However, a new format has been designed for the upcoming season, where the regions and the departments will take part in different tournaments.
While talking to Pakpassion, the discarded batsman from Karachi expressed that the move will improve the game in Pakistan.
"When the regions and the departments played together, the only competitive games were the ones that were played between the departmental teams," said http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Kamal-c70069. "When a regional team was up against a departmental team, it usually resulted in a one-sided affair.”
With all the major players representing their employers in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy, a number of young cricketers will get a chance to showcase their skills for the regional teams, which is an extremely positive thing in the Test cricketer’s opinion.
"It will not reduce the competitiveness of the regional tournament. That’s because the regions will only play amongst themselves which means that teams of the same potential will be up against each other. It will also give rise to opportunities for new players
to play First-Class cricket," he added.
Some of the former cricketers, including the 1992 World Cup winning captain and now a politician, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Imran-Khan-c64237, are of the view that regional sport should be given more importance in order to instil passion for the domestic game amongst the masses.
However, the departmental cricket cannot be ignored by the authorities, keeping in mind their history of producing players of the highest quality.
