Asjad Iqbal owes his victory to his parents: 3rd National Ranking Snooker Championship
Spectators present at the Karachi Gymkhana Club Snooker Hall arena witnessed another superb victory of the National Number One, Punjab’s Asjad Iqbal who was able to win his second Ranking National Snooker Championship title by the score line of 7-2 in the
final encounter against the talented Shahram Changezi.
Both potters were together at one table when they played in the round robin formatted group stage where Iqbal failed to win against Changezi. However, the Punjabi potter took revenge of his defeat in the final not letting his opponent create any trouble
for him. The game was expected to be a though one but Iqbal made it look easy for him because he kept Changezi under pressure from the beginning.
Winning over cueman like Changezi is indeed a huge success for Iqbal and he is quite happy with his form in the tournament. The youngster is aiming to make an appearance in the upcoming tournaments. After winning the title, Iqbal owed his victory to his
parents and his mentor, the former National Snooker Champion Muhammad Sajjad.
While speaking to The News at the end of the ceremony, Iqbal said, “I owe this win to my parents who always supported me in my game. I also called my mentor and coach Muhammad Sajjad after winning the title. It was my confidence and focus which was instrumental
in my success.”
He added, “The defeat at the hands of Shehram earlier in the tournament was not at the back of my mind because I had also whipped him in straight frames in an invitation event in Peshawar just before coming to Karachi. Neither was I seeking any sort of revenge
from him. I knew he was a dangerous player therefore I didn’t allow him many opportunities.”
Iqbal performed superbly in the initial stage and made his way into the quarters against Sultan Mohammad where he cleared the table in no time to beat Mohammad and surge into the semi-final stage. He faced the recent National Snooker Champion, Mohammad Asif
in the semi-final game and after a tussling encounter he totally unnerved Asif by the score line of 6-4.
