Asjha Jones stars as Connecticut Sun trounce Washington Mystics 77-64 - WNBA Recap
Led by Asjha Jones’ 20 points and 11 boards Connecticut Sun routed Mystics 77-64 on Friday night here at Verizon Center.
Sun had 4 players in double figures including Jones. Reserve Mistie Mims poured in 15 points and she was jubilant after the victory;
"It felt like it's been a month since we played,'' said Mims."We had a big cluster of games and we got really tired, but after a week of sitting around, we were ready to go again.''
Tina Charles scored 13 points to go with 10 rebounds while Renee Montgomery collected 10 points.
Sun’s have now won 7 of their last 9 games and their coach Mike Thibault was impressed;
“It was a combination of things,'' Sun Coach Mike Thibault said. ``Frustration with a bad game, a couple of really, really hard practices, and kind of wanting to take it out on somebody else after practicing all week with each other. We were pretty mentally ready to play this game.''
On the other hand things didn’t change much for the Mystics and they remain cemented at the last spot in Eastern conference.
Reserve Monique Currie tallied a game high 21 points and she also had 6 boards, while forward Crystal Langhorne recorded 11 points as Washington skidded down to a 5 game losing streak.
They were only 55.6% from the charity stripe while Sun had 84% success from there. Washington could never challenge Connecticut as the game never got tied even.
Sun opened their account in the game with an 8-0 burst and stretched it down to 18-7. Mystic tried to harness the lead and pulled off a 10-2 run, reducing the gap to 20-17, but Jones came up with a jumper and concluded the 1st frame at 22-17.
Washington opened the second with a 4-nothing burst and trimmed down the lead to 1 point, 22-21. However Sun rebutted back with a 12-3 spurt and claimed a double-digit 34-24 lead. Mystics however came up with an 8-2 run and concluded the opening half with a 36-32 deficit.
Connecticut opened the 3rd with a huge 12-nothing run and widened the gap to 48-32. Mystics could only come as close as 55-42 deep into the frame, when Sun pulled off another 8-2 burst. As the game entered into its last 10 minutes, Connecticut were leading by a margin of 19 points, 63-44.
The huge lead helped Sun cruise through the decisive frame and with 3:57 on clock they were up by 73-58.
