ok my parents decided that they were going to cancel their credit cards.i don't know why but know they are wondering how the are going to pay for our school.(we are homechooled and are using the pennfoster high school program).my parents are talking about me going to a public high school.

now,i have always wanted to go back to a public school at the very beginning of high school, but my parents refused.but now i am getting worried (i still want to go very much)about the fact that i don't know any algebra and i am in my junior year.

so here are my questions:

(1)in the state of virginia do i have to take a state test before i can go back to a public school after being homechooled?that's another thing that worries me.

(2)is there any homeschoolers like me who started in the middle of high school this late, and if so how well did you do for the first couple of months.did you know algebra?

(3)is there a way i can learn algebra from the begging this late into high school?at the school?

  1. How to survive?  Don't go.

You'll be much better off if you study at home and take your GED, then get into community college classes and skip the high-school stuff.

If you do well in home-study you won't even need a GED.  Take the college placement test and get into the courses that you need.

Get a good Algebra book -- Saxon math is great  --- and learn your Algebra.

Write full page essays every day.

Read the best books -- classic literature and original writings of people in history.  Read for at least 2-3 hours every day.

Get a part-time job and save money for college.  Never, never, never ever stop studying.  Study should be a part of your life forever.  Learn the most you can to be the best you can be.

  2. My guess is they are concerned about debt especially as the college years are approaching. You can continue homeschooling by making some less expensive homeschool choices. Less expensive does not mean less quality though. With PennFoster you are paying others to do the planning, score the assignments, and keep records. That adds up. Do these things yourself and you can save quite a bit of money.

Algebra will be a very important skill to several of the science courses as well as being needed for public school graduation in most states. Would it be possible for you to get the algebra in this year and delay public school entry until next year? If so, you may be able to have everything in place that you need. Used algebra textbooks are not too expensive.

I may have another solution that I can offer. E-mail me via my profile here at Yahoo Answers if you think that you would like to try an online algebra class. We have a bit of room in our algebra class. You will need a microphone because it is a live online classroom and a Saxon Algebra I, Third Edition text book and answer key. The online class itself is free. We have a pretty intense schedule planned so that the students that want to work through the summer can have Algebra II completed by about August of next year. You would be coming in at about lesson 56 in the algebra I text if you started next Monday, so I will be trusting that you will be dedicated enough to work in playing some catch up. We have two others just joining in as well, so you will not be alone as a new student.

You can learn a bit more about or algebra class at the webiste at http://www.virtualhomeschoolgroup.com/co...

Let me know if you want to join and I will be in contact what to do from here.

  3. One thing to make sure of...will the school even accept your homeschool credits?  Unless you've been using an accredited program, it's likely they won't.

This is something your parents need to make sure of and consider before sending you back to ps...otherwise you could end up having to re-take the last two years of your schooling in order to graduate.

    1) they may have you take a placement test just to make sure you're in the correct level of classes, but they can't refuse to take you.  That's why it's a public school.  Unless you manage to get yourself expelled through behavioral issues, they can't refuse you.

    2) There are other high schoolers who start mid-way through (though there are many more who leave ps halfway through to homeschool).  How well they do depends on them.  Some kids work just fine in a classroom setting, and some just plain don't.

    3) Yes, you can still take Algebra.  Quite frankly, I didn't understand a l**k of Algebra, even after finishing Algebra 2...and it didn't affect my graduation a bit.  (Of course, I had a teacher who held the opinion that "girls can't learn algebra", so he never bothered to actually teach me.  I'm actually learning a lot more of it now that my son's preparing to take it by a DVD curriculum.)  You do need to pass Algebra 1, but you don't have to be an expert at it.  You may find it easier than you think.

I wouldn't stress too much, but do make sure your parents check into the credit transfer before they put you back in ps.  It can be a real hassle to deal with once you're already back in the system.

    Good luck!

  4. Homeschool can be free and easy, go through the public library, design your own curriculum etc. as well, pennfoster would probably take mail in payments if you wanted to remain with it. You need to talk to your parents about the real reasons why they are quitting homeschooling. Maybe they having debt issues and your mom needs to go back to work? However, to answer questions

    1. You won't have to take a state test, but in high school age groups, the school you enroll in will want to test you to see what classes you need to be in. They'll also ask to see your paperwork from pennfoster to see what you've already covered.

    2. There are many homeschoolers who start in the middle, under similar situations. You don't say what grade you are in, but if you don't know algebra, they won't put you in the class for it, they'll put you in general math. that's the point of the testing.

    3. I think if you went into an algebra class halfway into the year, you would really struggle. Schools typically will not put you into a class that you are not prepared for, and I'd stick with the class that they put you in. You *could* start learning now, and see how much you could learn before testing. We got a saxon algebra book from our library through interlibrary borrowing. Go to the library and check in your catalog if they have anything. If not, ask the librarian if she could help you find one. But if you miss the basics, it will be so hard to understand what they are talking about in class.

  5. im homeschooled and i don't see how you don't know algebra. i learned that in 7th grade when i went to school. then i did algebra and some trig in 8th. your parents need to teach you better or go to school because there is no way you will get into college not knowing algebra. im 14 im the 10th grade and i already have a set plan for the next course i need to take and what college im going to.
