Aslam Sher Khan speaks out against Dow Chemical - Olympics
Aslam Sher Khan, who is an Indian Hockey Olympian, has recently shared his views publically against the Dow Chemical company.
Dow Chemical has come into a partnership with the London 2012 Olympics which has generated negative sentiment among much of the Indian community as the hold the company responsible for the tragic gas leak that took place in Bhopal in 1984. The company was
held responsible for the incident and had incurred liabilities subsequently but it has not paid them off as yet.
Aslam expressed himself in the following words regarding the matter: "It would be a shame for India and the IOA to take part in London Olympics while a company linked with 1984 Bhopal gas tragedy is being associated with it. Many countries in the past have
boycotted Olympics. It's time for India and its sportspersons to stand up. 25 members of British Parliament protested on Dow's association with London Games and why would not Indian government and IOA do the same and boycott the Olympics."
The tragic Bhopal incident took place because of a gas leak in a Dow Chemical factory based in Bhopal which triggered the loss of life for thousands of people. There were some immediate deaths that occurred because of the gas leak but over a period of time,
a total of 15,000 people lost their lives because of the gas leak. The Dow Chemical company was held responsible to make payments as form of compensation for the tragic incident but as of now, no such compensation has been made by the company.
On the other hand, the Dow Chemical company has entered into a contract with the International Olympic Committee in order to provide its services at the Olympic Games next year.
Despite the passionate stance that Aslam has taken on the partnership between the IOC and Dow Chemical, there are some who do not support the boycott of the Olympic Games by the Indian athletes.
The Olympic Games are heading towards London for the third time in the city’s history after which the capital of England will become the first city in the world to have the honour of hosting the Games for three times.
