Aslan Karatsev edges past Maxim Dubarenco into 2nd round of Boys’ Singles – US Open 2011
Unseeded in the competition, Aslan Karatsev of Russia won his opening round match against Maxim Dubarenco of Moldova in the Boys’ Singles category of the US Open championships on Monday afternoon.
The two contestants faced each other on the Court 10 of the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows Park, of Queens, New York City, United States, with the Russian registering a hard-fought victory to get
through to the second round of the Grand Slam event.
Karatsev took one hour and fifty four minutes of play to conclude victory at 6-4, 3-6, 7-5, to dispose of the Moldavian from the competition. The Russian was off to a flying start in the matchup, bagging the opener with ease but
lost his way in the middle of the competition to let his opponent back fire at him. Karatsev held his nerve in the intense pressure situations of the match and took the final set to register a convincing victory in the end.
Dubarenco was led down by his errant stroke play in the contest, as he coughed 13 double faults to bestow some un-fought points to the Russian opponent. Karatsev also spilled 12 double faults in the contest but fired seven thudding
aces to compensate for them and reeled off 51 out of 62 first serve points to come out as the winner in the end. The Russian competitor converted two of his four break opportunities in the matchup, while Dubarenco cashed in just one out of his three break
points to finish the match on the losing side.
No serve breaks were seen in the opening eight games of the match but Karatsev finally made his first move in the ninth game to get an opportunity to serve for the set at 5-4. The first set fell to the Russian’s name at 6-4 but
Dubarenco made his way back in the game in the following set, breaking Karatsev in the eighth game and served out at 6-3.
The final set went to the wire, with the score board moving on even terms to reach 5-5. It appeared as if a tie breaker would come into play but a critical serve break from the Russian in the 12th game sealed victory
for him at 7-5, sending him into the second round of the US Open Boys’ Singles. Karatsev will take on the sixth seeded Slovakian competitor, Filip Horansky, in his next encounter to fight for a place in the third round.
