Asmir Begovic transfer will not affect Portsmouth
Portsmouth Chief Executive David Lampitt has stated that the club will not delay their exit from administration over the £1 million owed to Tottenham Hotspur that the club is appealing.
The Premier League have said that Portsmouth must pay Tottenham the £1 million after a deal for Begovic did not go through and collapsed. The player then joined Stoke City.
Lampitt has only been the chief executive after the move was completed and he said, “We’ve considered our position and think the right thing to do is appeal. Whether it will have a delay, I would say no. We are still hoping that an exit from administration
is around the corner.”
The Portsmouth and Spurs deal was supposed to originally see Younes Kaboul and Begovic move to White Hart Lane. However, Portsmouth wanted an immediate payment and agreed that if Begovic was to be sold or loaned out to another club prior to his move to Spurs,
Portsmouth would pay £1 million in compensation. The Premier League said it would deduct the sum of money from Portsmouth parachute payment for 2011.
Lampitt added, "We are in the middle of the legal process so I don't want to go into the ins and outs. Maybe at the end of the process there will be a decision that gives people a bit more insight into what was an extremely unusual financial arrangement
between football clubs."
Portsmouth are already facing difficulties this season. They have started the season in poor form on the field and have had to sell a number of players after their relegation from the Premier League last season.
The Begovic transfer incident is another problem for Portsmouth and a delay in coming out of administration could cause more problems. The club have only managed to bring in players in exchange deals and unless Portsmouth can come out of administration soon
they may well find themselves in serious difficulty this season.
