I am 14 years old and i have asperger syndrome. I am home schooled for science and history and attend public school for math and grammar. I have tried EVERYTHING! I just can't remember anything that i read or learn. I just "Blank" at tests/homework. Unless i am looking at it or reading it i just don't remember it. I have tried notes, re reading, songs/poems, EXTRA studying, nothin g works. This is especially hard with math. The day do it i can be fine but the next day i dont remember a thing even after reading the same thing every day for weeks. What can i do?

  1. Your learning problem stems from a thinking style.  There are 2 thinking styles: verbal and non-verbal.  We all have the ability to think in both modes but when it comes to learning we tend to specialize in one particular mode.

Another name for a non-verbal thinker is a visual-spatial thinker or a picture thinker.  Your learning challenges suggest to me that you are a picture thinker.  The methods you are using to study and learn are "word" methods that work for "word" thinkers but not necessarily for "picture" thinkers.

There is a program that addresses your picture thinking.  You will learn methods that use your picture thinking style to give you success in learning.  And it is a fun way to learn!

  2. Maybe try reading the same thing day after day...im so sorry :(

  3. I would suspect that you need more visual items to remember things. For example, lots of pictures and diagrams, flow charts, mind maps. Think about the kinds of things you do remember, be it for math, grammar, movies, books, anything. What sticks out in your mind? What ties that information to you? How did you learn the things that you know? If you can pinpoint some specific things, it should help you see better what you need to do to remember.

You might also talk to the school about the problem. There may be an educational consultant as part of the school (district) who can provide specific help or they may be able to recommend someone to go see who deals with learning difficulties.
