  1. I would suggest trying to get in touch with your local autism socity.  Also visit the Autism Society of America website.  They might be able to get you in touch with a local support group.  You need the insight of other parents right now.

Asperger's kids are my heart and my soul.  The little professors that knows too much and speaks to frankly!  I am guessing your little guy tells everyone exactly how it is!  These kids are precious gems and his future will be very bright!  He will struggle with social skills so I recommend play groups, social groups, anything that will teach these skills early, as early intervention is the KEY!  You are one of those wonderful parents that knows this and this is why you are getting him tested! Kudos to you for that!  You are doing the right thing.  There is nothing to be afraid of.  Continue to love him as much as you love him and realize that this label will get you resources but he is still just a little boy with a brilliant mind and you can treat him just as you would any other child.  He will need clearly set boundaries, a very routine lifestyle, and consistency.  Allow him to soak up all the knowledge he chooses to embrace and teach him how to use that info in as functional a manner as possible.  You might want to look into wrap-around services if his behavior is a concern.  Behavior also presents itself in the form of anxiety and hypersensitivity so do not be afraid to seek support for this as well.  Please let me know if I can be of any other assistance to you.

  2. I have aspergers myself.  Its a social learning disability.   I hope your boy does not have it.  Socially, his future is pretty bleak if he has aspergers.   However, academically, he will probably do well.

If he does have aspergers, there are no drugs or treatments you can give him to cure him.  Social training and social therapy is the best thing for him.  He has to learn social behavior that others know automatically.

You should get him a weight lifting set and show him how to use it safely.  You need to make sure that he stays fit, muscular, trim and tan.  Constant trips to the pool help a lot with that.  He will care less about his appearance so looking good is a priority.  Other people are more likely to overlook his social flaws if he looks good.

When he becomes a teenager, you need to encourage him to be with the opposite s*x is age.  Don't place any restrictions on him.  Just give him the sexual knowledge to know how NOT to get girls pregnant.  Aspies come with all sorts of internal social restrictions and you need to minimize these restrictions and not add new ones.

Girls with aspergers don't have as much problems socially.  But again, I really hope that he doesn't have it.

  3. my friend has aspergers

    its quite mild

so she is low down on the autism scale

to be fair i wouldnt even know that she had it if she hadnt told me, i thought it was just part of her quirky character!

    she is intellegent and funny,

the only thing is that she is quite sensitive to some things and insensitive to others

but i think it just depends on the severity of it.

  4. Asperger's Syndrome is in the Autistic Spectrum, but it differs from autism in that it involves normal to high intelligence, high language skills, and so forth. The difficulty is with social skills and reading social cues, emotions, and so forth.

Don't worry, he'll be fine. Wait to see how the testing comes out, and what kind of resources are available to you. With the right support he'll be a different but normal kid.

  5. bill gates has aspergers-

most people without disabilties don't have such a successful life-

I also heard Robin Williams is an aspie

there are all levels-but most have good lives and are independent

  6. Most people with this diagnosis are extremely intelligent. They tend to do very well academically. Their main area of difficulty is with social relationships. They don't always understand the "rules" of conversation and interaction with others and they don't usually care, unless they need something from someone.

They can be helped through speech/ language therapy and social work. Once they learn how to read and use body language, gestures, facial expressions, etc. and the rules of social language, they can more easily make friends and interact better with others. It's not that they don't want to have friends, but more that they don't know how to engage with people, maintain the relationship, etc. They may dominate a conversation by talking extensively about their favorite topic, and yet not recognize that no one understands them or is bored.

For example, one of my students loved space. He could expound for hours (if I let him) about planets, stars, black holes, etc. He would talk about gaseous properties and core temperatures of planet using percentages. The problem was: A) the other first graders didn't understand what he was talking about. They were still learning the names of planets. B) he never gave them a chance to contribute to the conversation, and C) he didn't see their looks of confusion and frustration and stop talking.  He began to be seen as a know-it-all who perhaps thought he was better than other kids and was boring.

You are wise to have him evaluated now and start getting some services for him. The sooner he starts to develop these skills, the more successful he will be in life. Good social skills and understanding of others is essential to both work and your personal life.

  9. my neice victoria has it.

but, shes very smart and remembers everything she reads. shes totally normal, just shy and quiet.
