Former Newcastle United striker, Faustino Asprilla thinks that the current http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Liverpool-c39809 manager, Kenny Dalglish was the reason behind the Magpies downfall in the past.
The player from http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Colombia-c2873 mentioned that Newcastle were well placed under Kevin Keengan but went downhill after Dalglish took charge of the club. He accused the Scott of destroying the Magpies at the time when they were pressing for the league title.
Dalglish was appointed as the head coach of the Magpies in 1997 on a one and a half year term. He took over the reins of the club when they were 4th in the league table and guided his side to the second place behind Manchester United at the end
of the season. However, the Scott struggled to achieve considerable success in the next season and was eventually sacked by the club after a brief stint of 20 months.
Asprilla admitted that a lot was expected of Dalglish when he assumed his position as the manager.
“When Kenny Dalglish arrived at Newcastle I had heard so many good things about him, and I could not wait to play for him," he said.
However, he mentioned that the Scott failed to live up to his expectations and tried to introduce an exotic playing technique at Newcastle.
“Within months he had the team playing a style that was alien to most of us and he started to sell some of our star players.”
He was also critical of Dalglish, letting the key players like Peter Beardsley, Les Ferdinand and http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/David-c10409 Ginola leave under his management.
Ferdinand left Newcastle for Tottenham Hotspur in 1997 for a six million pound fee after he was reported to have created some differences with Dalglish. During his stay with the Magpies, the former English player was immensely famous amongst the fans. He
scored 50 goals in 84 appearances for the Magpies.
In the same year, David Ginola who was also hugely popular amongst the fans and Les Ferdinand moved out of Newcastle. Ferdinand had featured in 321 matches for the Magpies and scored 117 goals during that period.
The 42 year old believed that Newcastle could have gone on to win the title in 97/98 had it not been for Dalglish, who destroyed the team during his stay.
“The stars like [David] Ginola, [Les] Ferdinand and [Peter] Beardsley were moved on.
“It was a team that could have gone on to win the league, having come so close in 1996.I was sad to see Dalglish destroy the team.”
Asprilla himself had soar relations with the Scott and the striker blamed his former manager for not giving him a chance to play during his term. Later, Dalglish sold him to Parma for six million pounds in January, 1998.
