Alex Hutchinson, AC3’s creative director, explains that character development will be given a greater emphasis this time around, and here we thought Ezio had depth.
Ubisoft seem determined to follow an annual release model for their Assassin’s Creed series and are set to have another hidden blade wielding instalment in the series out by the end of this year with Assassin’s Creed 3.
From what has been revealed so far, the game will take place during the American Revolution and have the protagonist continuing the ancient war between the Templars and the Assassins.
A team from Ubisoft has also been working on the game for the past two years and have built the title on an improved engine, which can render huge battles.
As for the hero himself, well it turns out that gamers will have a much more intimate relationship this time around, which is quite a boast considering the level of intimacy experienced during the opening sequences of Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood.
All that aside, Hutchinson explained that they wanted to change things up this time around in terms of what drove the characters in previous games, “Altair is an assassin who’s driven by duty, Ezio is a character driven by revenge. We wanted someone who
was fresh.”
He continued, “We wanted a character who was more earnest, more real, a character with more depth.”
As to how Connor would live up to that billing, Hutchinson added that players would experience all the events that drove the character to join the ancient Assassin order.
“You will go from his birth, through the motivating factors that drive him to join the Assassins, through the American Revolution and finally to a resolution.”
As an added layer players will be fighting two wars simultaneously, one for the Assassins and the other for Connor’s people (Connor is a Native American who had an English father).
“Not only is he trying to help the Assassin’s defeat the Templars but he’s trying to save his own people and give them a place in the New America.”
It seems interesting but whether or not players can relate to the character remains to be seen. However, judging by the icons that Altair and Ezio have become, we would not bet against Connor achieving the same status.
