if so, how famous do you have to be in order to be "assassinated"?

Usually assassination is the killing of someone in power to change the outcome of events.

The difference really comes down to the motive rather than the act...

I think assanination has to be more for people in politics.  If say, Brad Pitt was killed...you wouldn't hear the press say he was assanitated...they would say he was murdered.

That depends! Does the media realy want it labels as such? If not, then they will say alive and not murder or assassination. Look here for proof!

People who are assassinated are usually famous where a man shot in the street is usually considered as having been murdered. Subject to these two definitions which puts it nicely.
