Laurent Detoc, the executive director of Ubisoft North America, stated that his aim would be to develop and release 10 games in the Assassin’s Creed series.
There have been a total of four Assassin’s Creed games in just as many years with Assassin’s Creed hitting shelves in 2007, followed by Assassin’s Creed 2 in 2008, Brotherhood a year later and finally Revelations, the latest title in the series, being released
just last year.
The annual release model has been coming under heavy criticism, mostly because of the Call of Duty series, which many state is the same game released every year with only a few tweaks and adjustments.
However, Laurent Detoc does not think that is the case with the Assassin’s Creed franchise. When asked if he enjoyed the prospect of making as many as 10 Assassin’s Creed games he replied, "I hope we will, I also hope we'll be able to branch out from within
the franchise.”
He continued by explaining that an annual release schedule only works if the product itself is any good, which in this case he believed it was and would continue to be. Detoc also explained that the game has been in development for over two years, "We started
this one in January 2010, the same time as Brotherhood and before Revelations. The core team on this one has been working at it for almost three years.”
However, he explained that the long development time meant that the title carried with it plenty of risks and therefore the studio needed something else to be in the market at the same time. He said, “We need the other projects to support that kind of development
- these big jumps.”
The executive director summed up his point of view and mindset by comparing the game to the popular Television series, Breaking Bad.
"It's funny, people say it's about how often you release new entries, but I really think it's about how good they are. If they put out Breaking Bad every day I'd watch it every day. I wouldn't need other TV.”
Gamers will have to wait until October before they can get their hands on the latest instalment in the Assassin’s Creed franchise.
