In the second part of our round up of all things Assassin’s Creed, we take a look at the engine Ubisoft has developed for the game.
Ezio Auditore de Firenze went from being a lady’s to a mass assassinating lady’s man with a hidden blade (no pun intended) to the master of assassinating and less of a lady’s man before the conclusion of his epic trilogy.
However, during that time the engine used to power the game was not given a major upgrade, instead it was tweaked and tuned, which made all the games feel rather the same but for a change in location and a few new combat moves.
That is not to say it was bad by any stretch of the imagination, in fact, Assassin’s Creed: Revelations was a sight to behold. Yet, at the same time one also got the feeling that the engine had reached its limits and that the next game in the series would need something different and new.
Apparently, the word on the internet is that the latest game in the series is built on a whole new engine that Ubisoft developed from scratch over a three year period.
The new engine should excite fans for a number of reason as it allows “thousands of troops” to be “engaged in bloody battle”, which basically means that the epic wars being fought in the background of the ending of nearly every Assassin’s Creed game can be brought to the forefront.
Codenamed the Anvil 2.0, the new engine will also open up new gameplay possibilities as it will lay a greater emphasis on traversal. Players will be able to not only climb buildings but also trees and cliffs, which will be sure to come in handy during the American Revolution, when buildings were not as tall as they are now.
At the same time, there will be improved facial animations, yet whether or not they will rival the one Team Bondi introduced with L.A. Noire is something that can only be commented on when it is seen.
It all sounds exciting at this point but with only a couple of screenshots and no actual gameplay trailer, it would be premature to comment at this stage.
