Assassin’s Creed Director defends yearly releases – Video Games Update
With the release of Assassin’s Creed 3 just on the horizon, the game’s director Alex Hutchinson has told Eurogamer that there is no harm in yearly game releases if the quality is maintained.
Many gamers are usually opposed to the idea of yearly releases as they believe that it impacts the overall quality of the final game and developers usually just rehash the last game with just a few minor additions to game-play and a new coat of paint.
The main culprit behind these criticisms is the Call of Duty franchise. Even though every Call of Duty launch is very successful and manages to gain a rabid fan following, it doesn’t change the fact apart from the new single player campaign; every title
offers a very similar experience. Activision’s Call of Duty is also responsible for the current trend of yearly releases.
Hutchinson, however, defends this trend and states that there is nothing wrong if developers can keep up the standards and quality of the product as he is very confident that Assassin’s Creed 3 will deliver a AAA experience to gamers everywhere.
One can’t argue with that response but Hutchinson is forgetting the fact that many gamers were also disappointed with the releases of Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood and Assassin’s Creed Revelations. Both the game were pretty much stand alone expansions of
Assassin’s Creed 2 and brought very little to the game apart from a multi-player mode and story progression.
This was because the two titles were using the same engine as Assassin’s Creed 2 and thus featured pretty much the same game mechanics. Even the main protagonist was the same throughout Assassin’s Creed 2, Brotherhood and Revelations.
"I find it strange we've decided yearly is too often. If Radiohead put out an album every month, I'd buy it. It's about the quality. Assassin's Creed 3 is as displaced from Assassin's Creed 2 as much as Medal of Honor is from Call of Duty,” stated Hutchinson
who believes that Assassin’s Creed 3 will be a true sequel and will be completely different than the previous instalments.
The game is set for a November release and from the trailers and screenshots released so far, it does look pretty impressive. Chances are that this might be this year’s Game of the Year.
