Assassin’s Creed: Revelations and Gears of War 3: trailer soundtrack done right - 2
5. Burn My Shadow Away by Unkle (Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood)
Taking a modern track and pairing it with a trailer set a few centuries before the artists and the audience were even born may seem like suicide, but in the end it worked out beautifully.
It took the game’s protagonist, already an icon in the gaming world, and took him to even greater video game heights (no pun intended).
The trailer was meant to show the combat and action elements of the game and in that sense the song was a perfect fit. Couple that with some sublime editing and the trailer made Ezio Auditore de Firenze even more of a bad a*s than ever before, something that many thought was not possible.
It also introduced a large number of gamers to a certain band called Unkle, who were probably wondering how they managed to get so many new fans overnight.
4. Lament by Light of Adian (Halo ODST)
There are video game trailers and then there are video game trailers and sometimes, if a generation is really fortunate, there are video game trailers like the one Halo ODST had.
There was no gameplay in the trailer and no lyrics in the song playing in the background. Well, there were lyrics, it is just that no one understood just what ‘Light of Aidan’ were singing, seeing how it was in Celtic.
Not being able to understand the lyrics apart, the song added a feeling of loss at the beginning and near the end as well, but somehow managing to evoke a feeling of brotherhood and wanting to get into some form of battle at the same time.
While the live action sequences in the trailer may have had a lot to do with those emotions, the soundtrack just took it to the next level in terms of emotion and immersion.
In many aspects the trailer was a win, in the sense that although no one understood what the lyrics meant, everyone understood what the emotions it was meant to stir up.
Altogether, it made for one amazing Halo ODST trailer.
3. The One by Elena Siegman (Call of Duty: World At War)
While it may not have been the song for the trailer for Treyarch’s Call of Duty: World At War itself, the song hit the spot and did not relent till the end of the visual spectacle.
To be more specific, the song was in the trailer for the s**+ No Numa Downloadable Content pack for the game and if anything, it probably earned Activision a little extra in terms of revenue.
For those who did not see the trailer, perhaps a slight background to the trailer itself would help in adding some context.
The trailer basically showed the four characters who make up the four players in the n**i Zombie mode, who are now gaming icons in their own right, and how the new map will aid players in battling the endless hordes of zombies.
It would have been just another gore-fest had it not been for Elena Siegman’s song, which it turns out was written just for the trailer itself.
The song was from a zombie’s point of view and how it wanted to be killed so it could be set free, among other things including a lust for flesh and blood. To be honest, it made us feel better about killing the undead and also made a large number of gamers look forward to the DLC Pack.
