Assateague will look to build on success in Keeneland when she runs in the Grade 3 Miesque Stakes
Michael Matz trained 2-year-old filly, Assateague, in her second attempt managed to break her maiden over a yielding grass course, which was in the end an easy winner at Keeneland. The win gave the filly the license to dwell into graded stakes company and
compete with the big girls.
Breaking her maiden on 26 October, 2011, Assateague stormed through and through under Julien Leparoux at Keeneland over at a mile on turf. Assateague downed his competition and took the race in 1 minutes and 38.80 seconds.
Her first attempt came at Saratoga where she ran over a distance of five and a half furlongs and never looked in contention to even challenge the leaders and wilted to finish seventh on 5 August, 2011.
The Kentucky bred daughter of Stormy Atlantic, out of mare Amelia by Dixieland Band, Assateague was then sent to run over at a mile, this time over at Belmont’s Park turf course on 16 September, 2011, under jockey J Castellano.
Assateague barely missed that day, as she finished second to winner Honey Talk who romped past Assateague in the final strides to top the mile distance in 1 minute and 38.19 seconds, with Sweet Zapper filling up the third slot to complete the top 3 order
of finish.
Now, after getting done with all the maiden stakes carnage, Assateague is now pointed toward the Grade 3 Miesque Stakes where she will face seven other fillies over at a mile on Hollywood Park’s turf course on 25 November, 2011, strictly for 2-year-old fillies.
More Than Love is one rival who is from another circuit, coming off a maiden special weight race win in her second attempt over at 1 1/16 miles at Belmont Park on turf.
One Florida arrival is the Starship Flare, has a starter allowance to show for her credentials even there she finished off sixth in a field of 10.
As long as Assateague is concerned, the winning jockey Julien Leparoux will be aboard her and she will carry a weight of 116 pounds. Assateague will break from post number 6 with More Than Love carrying co top weight of 118 pounds under Ramon Dominguez will
