Assault charge: Cincinnati Bengals’ LB Rey Maualuga avoids court sentence, faces NFL action-NFL News
Cincinnati Bengals’ linebacker, Rey Maualuga, faces a disciplinary action from the National Football League (NFL) under the personal conduct policy rules.
Maualuga has successfully avoided the possibility of a punishment in the court of law under an assault charge during a bar fight earlier this year.
Following confirmation of reaching a settlement through mediation with the victim to the court, the judge has dismissed the case against him.
He appeared in the Hamilton County Municipal Court on Thursday, April 26, 2012 and was let go unpunished due to the settlement.
The prosecutors told the court that neither the victim nor accused wanted to pursue the case in the court of law given that they have settled down the issues between them through a mediation process.
The player was indicted in an assault charge on a bar employee who on February 05, told local police that Maualuga had hit him in the face in the local bar.
Now with the dismissal of the case, he has avoided the possibility of punishment. It is not clear if the court was told of the terms of the settlement between the two parties.
Any of the settlement terms have not been made public by either side. However, the player is said to be happy over his safe exit.
Before leaving the court room soon after dismissal of the case, he expressed excitement by saying big "Thank you judge."
He might not be as lucky in case of the NFL if the league goes after him over violation of the rules of its personal conduct policy.
The chances of him being taken to the task by the league are higher given that he had already been penalised by the office in the past.
He was made to pay two game cheques and forfeit his two weeks’ share of his signing bonus after pleading guilty to drunken driving in 2010.
The player was then accused of hitting two cars and a car parking meter while driving under influence of alcohol.
Some commentators believe he might be facing a rather strict action from the league after getting into trouble with them second time.
