My friends tell me its good. They learn a new language and culture. One of my friends did a exchange program and lived in Peru for six months. He came back and spoke Spanish well to anyone who can speak Spanish as he took immersion Spanish and learn about Latin American culture. Since then, he went back to Peru two more times (and get to stay in his exchange host family for free) , travelled to Mexico, Columbia, Chile, Argentina and Uruguay.

So in short, it is true and you will learn a lot from student exchange experience.
