To make paper look old use a journal page and crumple up pages a little, and then make a pot of tea, and once it is cool, dip the pages in it, to give them a brown aged look.

Yeah, tea would work but I have used a brush and coffee in the past. Also, you could use a lighter and burn the edges.

The research depends on the topic. What about the 1600s? For American history the 1600s were about colonization. You could look into Puritan writings like William Bradford or Cotton Mather, or research the founding of Jamestown. For European events, research the English Civil War, the Glorious Revolution, or the scientific revolution, all of which happened in the 1600s. Also, p****y was big in the 1600s as the Carribean colonies flourished, especially Port Royal, Jamaica, until it was destroyed by an earthquake.
