Question:

Assisted living for young (55) Alzheimer's patient?

I'll keep it short. My mother is suffering from Alzheimer's or another similar form of dementia. She's very young and vibrant, but impaired.

Recently, she's moved into a wonderful assisted living facility with a great staff. But given the significant age difference between her and all of the others around her, she is feeling especially unhappy.

I have evaluated the options around us and no place here seems to be at all compatible with both her memory issues and her age

Does anyone know of ANY assisted-living facilities that would be an age-appropriate place for a woman of 55?

  1. I'm sorry you have to deal with this, Alzheimer's is a terrible disease.  I don't know of any that have a younger client base; your best bet would be to visit some of the ones in your area to see for yourself.  The only other option would have been to keep her in her own home with a live-in caregiver (family member, or hired help)....if you were to do that, there are some adult day cares that have Alzheimer's patients that attend there.

  2. You might want to ask the local Alzheimer's Disease caregivers support group for suggestions.
