I'm a teacher at a kindercare and I have my AAS degree in child care, I was wondering if i should go back to school and get my BA but I'm 28 and time is running out, I was wondering if i should just stick it out at my job until a position opens to be a director or an Asst. Director but i don't know how much they make...is it much more that what I'm making now??

  1. I would go back and finish up to get your degree. You can actually teach K-6th grades with a BA in the Private schools. There are just so many more doors open to you once you have that 4 years degree. Believe me when I say that it isn't really all that much more money to work as an Assistant Director or Director and the stress that comes along with it isn't that great. I went back to Teaching myself. Much more fulfilling.

  2. Without question, go back to school.  The difference between a 2 year and 4 year degree is enormous.  Your options will open up significantly.  Yes, a director makes much more than you are making now.  Also, schools and childcare centers look for the candidate with the most education.  Do not limit yourself by "sticking it out until a position opens up".  Often, the people who have those jobs are very aware how lucky they are to have them.  I have been waiting for a position to open up for 6 years.  I am good at what I do and have a 2 year degree.  If and when the position does open up, they could hire someone with a 4 year degree and be totally justified in doing so.  Broaden your options by going back to school while you can.  Get a degree in Elementary Education or Early Childhood Education.

  3. it's never a bad idea to continue your education, especially if klc has tuition reimbursement.  so i'd say go get your degree on their dime.  as far as a director position, it does pay quite a bit more annually but if you break down how many hours a week they work, it normally comes out to far less than a teacher.  and the responsibilities are enormous.  so it really depends on what you want out of life.

i've been a director for years and i am considering returning to the classroom.  i'm tired of trying to motivate people to do their jobs and all the nonsense that comes with management.  so weigh your options carefully.

but to have your degree would mean you'd have more options than just director.  you can teach in a public/private preschool (not a daycare), be a director, a family involvement specialist, area director, etc.

even with an associates you can be a director in most states.  normally the large chains will want you to have a bachelors but some will hire you with an a.a. and experience.  and if you go to a small local center your chances of becoming a director with an a.a. are much higher.

    good luck
