Question:

Assylum Seeker?

I know of someone who is desperately seeking refugee status - he is very ill and could even die. I have approached various embassies by e-mail and received no response.

Who can I contact? It's now becoming an emergency!

  1. Assuming he's out of his own country, he needs to contact the UNHCR, the UN High Commision for Refugees. Countries won't normally consider a person for resettlement until they've officially been designated a refugee by the UNHCR, so there really isn't any point to talk to the embassies just yet. Plus, different countries have their own refugee resettlement policies.  In most places the US won't interview an individual for refugee status until he's be identified as a refugee by the UNHCR and processed and prepared for interview by one of the various NGOs that do these things, like ICMC, the International Catholic Migration Commisssion out of Geneva. Given what little you've said here, there really isn't much more I can say.
