Asteroids and Comets also follow different paths around the sun.

There are asteroids that have sprouted tails like comets.  And there are comets that no longer sprout tails.  So there may not be much difference after all, at least for some.

The distinction is observational.  They look spectacularly different.

actually the person who voted thumbs down was right. asteroids are big hunks of rock that follow an orbit around the sun. a commit is a bit of rock and ice that just flys randomly through space. the tail is just bits and pieces of rock and ice that is bracking of and flying out the back. it only appears near a star though because space is a vacuum.
