Astigmatism - 5 year old kid?

Question

My son will turn 5 this summer, when we went to the doctor for a healthy baby checkup, they found problems with his vision. The OD told us he has moderate astigmatism and that he will always need to wear glasses. Wondering if there is any type of eye correction which will help him, also will it get bad as time progresses.

You can fix astigmatism with Lasik, but he is far too young to even look into it yet. This is coming from my Optometrist. The problem with performing Lasik on eyes that are going to keep changing is that their vision will slowly become worse.

Once he's an adult, Lasix can fix it; of course, by then, they could easily come up with something else.  My son has REALLY awful vision, (literally can't see the big "E" on the chart).  It was first detected when he was seven.  My best advice to you is to get him into contact lenses as SOON as possible - as soon as he can handle them properly, and is able to understand that they must be kept clean.  It's MUCH less of a hassle than broken/forgotten glasses, and he can wear normal eye protection gear for almost every situation (with the exception of a chemistry lab - they absorb some chemicals).  My son is now 27, and there's no question that it was a good idea to get him to the point of wearing contacts EARLY.

When my son was 3 we were told the same thing. Ask your dr about exersizes for the eye. He is old enough to sit still and watch your finger as you go from his nose out and back.
