Question:

Astigmatism?

I have an astigmatism in my left eye. I went to get my learners permit and couldn't get it until I had my eyes screened by a professional. I'm getting that done tomorrow. But does anyone know how it'll will affect me? My astigmatism doesn't affect my distance vision and i see fine as long as I can use both eyes. Will I need glasses for when I'm driving too? Will I still be able to get my permit and license? I'm kind of worried about it, but I know people drive with astigmatisms all of the time. Unless my vision has drastically changed in the last 7 years I don't think anything else is wrong. Just the astigmatism.

  1. I have astigmatism in my left eye and my right eye has normal vision.  My right eye will pass the DMV vision test and my left eye will not.  I am not legally required to wear corrective lenses while driving, but I choose to do so.  My left eye has difficulty reading street signs and my depth perception improves when I correct my vision.

If the astigmatism does not impact your distance vision then you do not need to wear corrective lenses while driving.  If your distance vision is impacted by the astigmatism.  I suggest that you wear corrective lenses while driving even though the DMV may not require you to do so.

    Good Luck!

  2. I have astigmatisms in both eyes, on top of cross eye and over +5 in each eye. I can drive with contacts and it just says that on the back of my license. Good luck!!

  3. hello..I have a similar problem to you- I'm shortsighted in my right eye (-2.00 D) and have perfect 20/20 vision in my left eye. You will still be able to get your permit if you have 20/40 vision or better in one eye- this was the case for me as I could past the vision test easily with my left eye. You can drive without glasses if you want to but if you are experiencing any problems when driving then use your glasses- thats what I do to help with depth perception despite the fact I'm able to see properly when both eyes are open.
