His optician says that he has astigmatism. When I got his prescription filled for his glasses the lady said he could grow out of it. How true is this?

  1. An astigmatism has to do with the shape of the eye, so he won't grow out of it.

  2. His astigmatism may get better or worse over time, but he will never fully grow out of it, just like a normal glasses prescription. But, it is actually more likely that astigmatism will get worse! Eyes will change by themselves very easily over time, regardless of what we do, and I don't believe that doctors know why yet. I truly don't believe that he will outgrow his astigmatism, but maybe the doctors know something that you and I don't. You should ask why that was said next time you go.

  3. I was diagnosed with astigmatism as a child about his age, got my first eyeglass prescription for it as a teen, only wore my glasses a few times, did not start wearing corrective lenses on a regular basis until I was an adult.  I never outgrew and it did get worse over time, but it was not too bad overall.

I was at 1.5 diopters when I started wearing corrective lenses.  I was experiencing some problems as a result of it and that is the only reason I chose to correct it.

I am not sure how high his prescription is, but he may not need to wear corrective lenses yet.  I have done some research about astigmatism.  Many doctors say that unless other refractive errors (myopia/hyperopia) are present that astigmatism may not need to be corrected until it reaches +/- 1 diopter.  If he is uncorfortable with his vision or experiencing other problems such as headaches related to it, then it probably should be corrected.  If he is not experiencing any vision problems, then you may want to go without correcting it and see how things go.

  4. Yeah, I never outgrew mine.

  5. The lady does not know much about eyes.
