if you have an astigmatism, is your eye shaped any differently than someone who doesn't have one?

  1. Yes. It's shaped like a football.

Yes.  People without astigmatism have a sphere-shaped eye (like a basketball).  It will focus light to one point.  Poeple with astigmatism have an (American) football-shaped eye.  This causes light to be focused to two different points in the eye.  Therefore, horizontal lines will come into focus at a different place than vertical lines for someone with astigmatism.  It is corrected by adding cylinder into the lens.
