Aston Villa striker Gabriel Agbonlahor will undergo surgery to heal injured groin
Aston Villa striker Gabriel Agbonlahor will undergo a minor operation to repair his injured groin which has been bothering him since the start of the season.
Agbonlahor is expected to be out for at least two weeks meaning he will miss Villa's upcoming match against Tottenham and will also be ruled out of England's upcoming Euro 2012 qualification match against Montenegro on Oct. 12
– though England boss Fabio Capello's decision whether or not to include Agbonlahor in the lineup was a subject of debate.
"Gabby will have a minor operation on Monday evening on his groin," said Gerard Houllier,
Aston Villa's manager. "He had to leave training this morning because it was too painful. I think the England squad is given on Monday and that has definitely ruled him out."
Houllier seems confident that the operation will fix the problem that Agbonlahor has been having and that his striker should be back in the lineup soon.
"He could be available for the Chelsea game (which takes place on Oct. 16) but," Houllier said, "if not, definitely for our match against Sunderland (set to take place the following weekend)."
Agbonlahor has failed to score in the four matches he's played in this season as he's been dealing with the injury. Villa have managed to find some scoring from other sources such as veteran striker Emile Heskey and 25-year-old Ashley Young, and as
a result Aston Villa are currently sitting in the top five of the English Premier League.
Villa currently have three wins, two losses, and one draw with 10 points, and sit just five points back of league leaders Chelsea. With Arsenal set to square off against Chelsea this weekend, Villa will be hoping to gain some ground and secure points
which might help them earn of those coveted Champions League spots.
