Does anyone have any idea what you should choose from the drop-down district list on FreeBMD if wanting to search for ancestors from Aston on Trent in Derbyshire.

Thanks in advance.

  1. I would think Derbyshire would be the best to choose? If this isn't available to select, I would just leave it blank, because there can be anomalies in the inputting of the data. If it's inputted wrongly, and you select the wrong county, it will totally skip the result you're looking for.

I don't select an area, because for a lot of my research I was looking at Kingston Upon Thames. From the 1700s to present day, it's been three different counties - Surrey, Middlesex and London. I found it easier to just search nationally, and scan the page for Kingston results.

You can also press Ctrl - F when the results page comes up, then type "Aston". It will highlight all text that says Aston on the page.

  2. Hi, answered this already and then you deleted the question!

    It's Shardlow.

Good luck - I'm a FreeBMD transcriber and am glad you are using our service!

  3. I thought you might like to have a look at this web site, it is the most amazing site. I live in Nottingham, but like you my ancestors came from Derbyshire, the Shardlow area, which I hasten to add is a massive area. This site is a photographic record of Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire mainly but there are many other places in the UK in their photographic database, you can download a lot of these photos and print them off, it gives full instructions.

When you open up the link click on the search images tab at the top, then on the next page click accept. This leads you into the search page where you will find the drop down menus. The middle box you need to click on Aston on Trent, and in the bottom box use the scroll down menu and click Derbyshire.

I live just 15 miles from  Derby town centre, if you need any additional help to that already given to you, please just edit your question  and ask.
