Is it possible to dye an Astral Aquavest 300R Rescue PFD (which is yellow) black using Rit dye? This is an expensive jacket used by a whitewater rafting guide. I really wanted a black but they are not available.

  1. Black is a really tricky color for dying.  You never know what you'll get even if you dye something that was white to begin with. Go ahead and try.  If you're gonna use RIT, which is probably your best option, then dye it in your washer and let it soak for a while.  It's not going to hurt your washer.  After you dye it, use vinegar (you can do half part vinegar/half part water) to set it or it may wash out slowly over time.  You'll want to do a vinegar soak, but not for as long as you do your dying.  Beware--the clothes you wear under your PFD are possibly going to get stained if the color rubs off.  Good luck!

  2. you should have bought the red one :P

its hard to say. a friend of mine tried to dye his rashvest black and it turned out orange. you don't really know how the materials will react.

you could give it a try but i would be concerned that it won't dye well and the design would go to shite

the yellow still looks good tho. the dye would probably wreck the hand warmers anyway
