What does astrology really mean?

If astrology or astrological science really exists, does that mean that the fate and future of human beings are prefixed or predetermined by the long long distant stars and planets on the sky or by the lines on our hands ??

and our fate and future can be totally predicted or calculated by somehow by the rules and logics of Astrological science??

  1. Astrology is the "original" science. It is a science of "synchronicity" as is the Oriental method called the IChing or Tarot. Synchronicity is the name for the principle that says "what is done or begun at a given moment of time has the qualities of that moment of time". This was described by and the tern coined by Swiss Psychiatrist, Carl G. Jung. He also did considerable empirical studies to prove the fact to himself prior to proclaiming his acceptance of the science. Psychologists and psychiatrists around the world rely on astrological interpretation to help them uncover problems not otherwise visible. Astrology is an incredibly useful tool in self-discovery. How can one understand others without a concrete and useful understanding of themselves. How can one understand their own perspective in looking at others?

Your question, "If astrology or astrological science really exists, does that mean that the fate and future of human beings are prefixed or predetermined by the long long distant stars and planets on the sky or by the lines on our hands ??" I don't know much about palmistry but have known people who were amazingly accurate with their interpretations. I have critically studied astrology since about 1966 and am convinced of its validity. The notion that our fate is determined by distant stars and planets is common and even held by many who call themselves, "Astrologers." It is wrong however. The distant planets and stars have no more to do with our fate than the hands of the clock or the numbers the hands point to. Neither control the mechanism -- the hands movement is controlled by the mechanism and the background stars or the ecliptic, are the metric. The mechanism is in the Earth itself, the environment of which we are inexorably a part. The planets are the eguivalent of hands of a complex clock; the background stars or the apparent path of their travel, as viewed from the center of the clock, are nothing more than the numbers the hands point to in their travel -- in their cyclic movement. Astrologers know, for instance, that if a person is born while the Sun occupies a paricular house of their chart and the Sun occupies a particular sign, they can predict certain behaviors or personal qualities. They can predict a person's personality. If an accurate analysis (and synthesis) of a birth chart can be constructed by a competent astrologer, and let's say the person being evaluated is a nasty SOB, then it is pretty easy to predict that he or she will face resentment or even violence from others.

The interpretation of the chart is both a science AND an art. The science would be the use of analysis, that is there is a planet or other element in a particular house or sign, then it means the following... Synthesis (where it becomes an art) tells the capable astrologer interpretations of the whole, or much broader influences. As we move from the Science to an Art, it is often helpful, like dream interpretation, to have the interpretation completed in a collaboration with the person for whom the chart is being interpreted.

I hope this helped. Please feel free to write either on this board or personally to find out more or to challenge what I've written.

    Respectfully,

    Wes

  2. Though astrology needs science it is not a science. Modern science uses what is called "the scientific method"

    This is the basics:

    1. Observe some aspect of the universe.

    2. Invent a tentative description, called a hypothesis, that is consistent with what you have observed.

    3. Use the hypothesis to make predictions.

    4. Test those predictions by experiments or further observations and modify the hypothesis in the light of your results.

    5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 until there are no discrepancies between theory and experiment and/or observation.

When consistency is obtained the hypothesis becomes a theory and provides a coherent set of propositions which explain a class of phenomena. A theory is then a framework within which observations are explained and predictions are made.

A theory is accepted not based on the prestige or convincing powers of the proponent, but on the results obtained through observations and/or experiments which anyone can reproduce: the results obtained using the scientific method are repeatable. In fact, most experiments and observations are repeated many times (certain experiments are not repeated independently but are repeated as parts of other experiments). If the original claims are not verified the origin of such discrepancies is hunted down and exhaustively studied.

There is a very important characteristic of a scientific theory or hypothesis which differentiates it from, for example, an act of faith: a theory must be ``falsifiable''. This means that there must be some experiment or possible discovery that could prove the theory untrue. For example, Einstein's theory of Relativity made predictions about the results of experiments. These experiments could have produced results that contradicted Einstein, so the theory was (and still is) falsifiable.

Astrology, since there is no evidence that can pass testing, is by nature is a belief and can not apply the method. How does one test a belief? But it's claims can be tested and there it fails to do better than chance.

As for Newton (a very religious man), the quote was about religion not astrology. He had four books on astrology in his library, one of the debunking it. For a man that supposed to have "studied" astrology, he never wrote one sentence about it.

I find it interesting how people can be called ignorant by "experts" that can not provide proof of astrology's own existence. First prove that it works then make the theories on how.

  3. its just a bunch of bs made up by people who want to believe that God doesn't exist, even though God's existence is undeniable if you actually look at it scientifically you can prove that it is scientifically impossible that, this world and the human race, happened by accident. We are able to make decisions, which means we have free will, therefore nothing can be pre-determined if our actions are unpredictable.
